My Roots in the Yoga Capital

The city I was born is also the place where my yoga story begins: Rishikesh in India β€” nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, known across the globe as the Yoga Capital of the World.

Rishikesh is more than just a city, it’s a spiritual place where the sacred Ganges River flows and the ancient wisdom of yoga lives in every corner. For centuries, yoga practitioners, masters, and spiritual seekers have journeyed to this unique place to practise, study, and teach. The deep-rooted connection with yoga and meditation practices, the association with Hindu scriptures and the beautiful nature surroundings have made Rishikesh the world's undeniable home for yoga.

Let me share some snippets of how it has shaped my yoga path.

  • Growing up in Rishikesh, yoga was not only a career choice I made, it was the very air I breathed. From my earliest memories, I was surrounded by the philosophy and practice of yoga. My full dedication to the practice began in my teenage years, with a commitment that went far beyond the mat.

My days would usually start long before sunrise to make it to the shala on time. Trained in the tradition of a Karma Yogi, the time on the mat was only one part of my journey. Yoga became a school for life. Besides countless hours of practising asanas, I learnt just as much in the hours off the mat: The time of dedicated service around the physical practice.

Cleaning the shala, working reception, hosting students, and assisting my teachers in their classes. It taught me humility, discipline, and the understanding that yoga is a holistic path that includes every aspect of life, from the simplest task to the most complex pose.

  • Yoga is my key and singular path i chose. It is the only tool I have ever used to make a living. Yet, the path is not one I walked alone: I was fortunate to be guided and invested in by my teachers, who so generously shared their knowledge and wisdom with me.

What I do today feels like a way of giving back for all that I have received. I have invested everything I have into the practice of yoga, not only for myself but as a duty to the teachings I was entrusted with. I carry the wisdom of my guru and the spirit of Rishikesh with me always, and found my purpose to share it with the world.

  • My journey may have taken me beyond the banks of the Ganges, but I feel deeply connected to my roots. I return to Rishikesh at least once a year, not only to revisit the place where my path began but also to reconnect with the lifelong friendships and family.

Every trip back is a reminder of where I came from and the lessons that have shaped me. I truly believe Rishikesh is a wonderful destination for any yoga practitioner. The energy, the teachings, and the community are unlike anywhere else in the world. If you are ever planning a trip to India and wish to experience the heart of yoga, I am more than happy to share my knowledge and recommendations with you.
